14th July 2009, Tuesday – ESP performed a live demonstration of their Deck Lite technology at the Marine Construction Yard. Selected BSP personnel and SKSWood management played audience to the demonstration of ESP’s Decklite system, which is a modern, safe, reliable and cost effective alternative to aluminum scaffolding, using modern materials which allows easy folding and rolling without losing its integrity.
The ESP Decklite system is a relatively new but already well proven technology to access difficult to reach areas efficiently without the need of costly scaffolding systems. The system consists of fibre gauge netting, which is held in place by steel wires. It can be quickly installed by a team of competent and skilled Rope Access technicians. Due to the modular nature of the Decklite system, small or large areas can be covered using a variety of their re-usable panels.
The system weighs only 1.5 kilograms per square meters and can support 1,500 kilograms per square meters with a few centimeters deflection. It meets the ISO standards, making it ISO 9001-2000 certified.
This system is typically applied in such working conditions as:
- below offshore platform cellar decks
- over-the-side work
- inside tanks of FPSO’s and tankers
- inside onshore storage tanks
- under roofing
- below offshore production decks
- above a work force to prevent risk of falling objects
- as fall protection below a work area
- painting and blasting of larger areas at height or difficult-to-reach areas
Decklite Inventor - Head of Training and Development/technical, Mr. David Heaney was present to explain the specifications of the technology and answer all questions from the audience. Also present were the BSP trainee attachments at SKSWood, with this experience providing them the valuable opportunity to understanding one of the many technical aspects of offshore equipment; what to look for and how the specifications are important in relevance to the scope of works.
